Background of the Study
Transnational advocacy networks (TANs) play a vital role in advancing human rights reforms by connecting activists, NGOs, and international organizations across borders. Global women’s rights movements have been particularly effective in mobilizing public support, influencing policy reforms, and challenging discriminatory practices (Adebisi, 2023). These movements leverage digital media, international conferences, and coordinated campaigns to raise awareness about gender-based discrimination and to press for legal and social reforms. Through sustained advocacy, they have achieved significant milestones such as improvements in legal frameworks, enhanced protection for women’s rights, and increased representation in decision-making bodies (Mensah, 2024). However, transnational advocacy efforts often face challenges such as political resistance, resource constraints, and differing cultural contexts that may impede the implementation of human rights reforms. This study examines the effectiveness of transnational advocacy in promoting women’s rights reforms by analyzing global campaigns, policy outcomes, and the strategies used to overcome obstacles. It aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how global advocacy networks can drive change and foster a more inclusive international human rights agenda.
Statement of the problem
Despite notable successes, transnational advocacy for women’s rights often encounters significant hurdles. Political resistance, cultural barriers, and limited resources can hinder the effective implementation of human rights reforms promoted by global women’s rights movements (Okoro, 2023). There is a need to assess whether these transnational networks are successful in bringing about lasting policy changes or if their efforts remain largely symbolic. This study seeks to identify the factors that impede the translation of advocacy into effective reforms and to evaluate the overall impact of these global movements on advancing women’s rights.
Objectives of the Study
To examine the role of transnational advocacy in promoting women’s rights reforms.
To identify challenges that impede effective policy change.
To propose strategies to enhance the impact of advocacy efforts.
Research questions
How effective are transnational advocacy networks in promoting women’s rights reforms?
What challenges hinder the implementation of these reforms?
What strategies can strengthen transnational advocacy for human rights?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the mechanisms by which transnational advocacy networks drive human rights reforms, particularly in the area of women’s rights. Its findings will inform activists, policymakers, and international organizations on best practices for overcoming obstacles and achieving tangible policy outcomes. The recommendations will contribute to a more robust global framework for promoting gender equality and human rights (Adebisi, 2023; Mensah, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to transnational advocacy for women’s rights and does not cover other human rights issues or movements in different regions.
